Max Brooks on the Pandemic and Minecraft
Why the prophet of doom thinks a video game can help save the world.
Max Brooks and I first met on a playdate when our boys were toddlers. It was a match made in hell.
He wrote bestselling books about the undead, and I made online pranks videos for the brain dead. He had security meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and I ran a magazine about Joints. Max strategized about surviving Sasquatch attacks, and I strategized about surviving sinus headaches.
And somehow, a friendship was not only born but has endured over the years.
I’ve had Max on my podcast four times—a world record. One each episode, he manages to both enlighten and scare the living bejesus out of me.
This time was no different.
Inside his secret bunker, we discussed everything from the surprising lessons he learned from the pandemic (one word: Taiwan??), how he convinced his dad Mel Brooks to do PSAs about social distancing AND voting for Joe Biden, why he believes that Minecraft is the most important educational tool in the past 30 years, and what I can do about those blasted sinus headaches (ok, that part isn’t true).
